Manet's original style of painting was influenced by a study of the Old Masters at the Louvre, especially the old Spanish masters. He later developed a unique technique focusing on the opposition of light and shadow with as little half-tone as possible. He painted with a sense of intense intimacy using a restricted palette with a lot of black.
Manet's style changed under the influence of Monet and Berthe Morisot during the 1870's. He began using the Impressionist palette and painting in the open air using quick brushstrokes.
